Common Queries

How do I know if you're the therapist for me?
First off, it is very important that you feel comfortable with your therapist and it is always ok to end with a therapist, if they do not seem like a fit for you. Most people have a good sense in the first 2-3 sessions but definitely if after 10 sessions, you aren't seeing any benefit or experiencing a preferred change, it is likely not the right fit.
What therapy models do you use in your work?
We most closely align with Narrative Therapy or Narrative Practices. We have a behavioral, neurological, trauma-informed and cognitive background which all can inform our work at times. We are also influenced by social constructionism, anti-racism, disability justice, social justice, and restorative justice.
How long will I be in therapy?
Everyone's journey in therapy is different and will largely depend on many factors such as your involvement, commitment and consistency, things happening in your life and in society, and our rapport and fit with one another. Having said that, around session 3, we will develop goals and a timeline for looking at progress together. Most timelines are anywhere from 3 months to a year and we will continuously update this timeline and your goals.
How long does each therapy session take?
Most sessions are 50 minutes. An 80 minute session can be requested, schedule permitting.
Do you only work with autism?
No, we work with any individuals and families seeking support for mental health and relationship concerns. Common concerns and challenges that people come to us with are: neurodivergent identities, queer and trans identities and experiences, highly sensitive persons, twice-exceptional identities, sensory processing, anxiety, depression, dealing with change, parenting, and struggles in relationships.
Are you a Psychologist or BCBA?
Neither. We are Licensed Marriage and Family therapists, licensed in the state of California. Courtney Olinger holds a Doctorate in Psychology (PsyD) in the area Marriage and Family Therapy.
Do you provide assessment?
All therapy starts with an initial assessment process to help us better understand your current concerns and determine with you the therapeutic direction of our work together. Courtney Olinger is trained in some assessments for autism; however, she does not currently provide comprehensive assessments. If an adult is interested in exploring the possibility of autism, there are many factors to consider and Courtney would be happy to talk you through those and can provide a diagnostic assessment to determine if you meet criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder.
What trainings, workshops and consultations do you offer?
We tailor trainings, workshops, speeches and consultations to the audience seeking support. The best way to determine if we can support you or your organization, is to contact us. It helps to know who the audience will be, what format/platform is being used for the presentation, time allotted, and specific interests and hopes for the presentation.
